Tool 02.1.1 ADDIE MODEL

Description #

The ADDIE model is a systems approach for designing and developing training and learning programs. The acronym ADDIE represents five key phases: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation. During the analysis, training needs are identified and objectives are defined. In the planning phase, the training plan is developed and teaching resources are designed. The development phase involves the actual creation of training materials. The implementation of the training program takes place in a physical or virtual (online) environment. In the evaluation phase, a judgment is expressed on the effectiveness of the program and future improvements are outlined. The ADDIE is a flexible and widely used model in the field of training and education.

How to use this tool #

The ADDIE model can be adapted and used in different application areas in the context of vocational training and education (VET):

Training: the ADDIE model provides a structured and systematic framework for creating effective training programs. In the analysis phase, specific learning needs and objectives for learners are identified, ensuring that the content is relevant and targeted. During planning, a detailed curriculum is developed and teaching methodologies are defined, ensuring that material is presented in a clear and engaging way. In the development phase, educational materials and resources are created, integrating technologies and interactive tools to improve the learning experience. In the implementation phase, the course is created by putting into practice the teaching strategies defined in the previous phases. The evaluation allows measurement of the effectiveness of the training program and provides the feedback necessary to prepare continuous improvements.

Work-based training: the ADDIE model can be used to develop customized training programs. The analysis phase serves to identify the skills necessary to carry out a task or job effectively. In the design phase, the learning contents and methods are planned. The development phase involves selecting and creating the most appropriate training materials and resources to use in the implementation phase. Evaluation measures effectiveness in terms of improving learners’ skills and, in some cases, productivity.

Tutoring and support for work inclusion and job placement: The ADDIE model can be used to create customized orientation and skills development programs. The initial analysis evaluates the specific needs of the learner, which is followed by the identification, implementation and evaluation of support and coaching interventions. The personalization of paths is very important in this type of intervention, especially in relation to the processes of individual empowerment and strengthening of transversal skills, which play a decisive role in access to work.

Support for self-entrepreneurship and business creation: In many VET courses, the development of managerial and entrepreneurial skills constitutes a (more or less extensive) part of the learning programme. The ADDIE model can also be used to design these areas of training, applying a vertical logic (based on training objectives and results specifically tailored to the start-up and management of professional and entrepreneurial paths) or a horizontal logic (for which managerial skills and entrepreneurial are considered transversal to the learning path).
